Sorry for the delay in writing up the goings-on of the past few weeks, it’s been rather hectic at LTC towers of late.
The significant news is six members of LTC (Lucian, myself, Shane, James, Tom, Joe) managed to fill the A team for Lincoln Wellington AC and win the Northern Road Relays by over two minutes last weekend. The consistency of the squad was evident in that all of the lads in the A team registered a time within 19 seconds of one another! This was a big achievement for LWAC, especially considering it’s our first senior medal at one of the big national events. As I wrote in my last blog, we did sort of expect to be in contention for the win, but to finally get the job done is a big relief for us all.
However, I wasn’t overly impressed with the aspersions cast by the Athletics Weekly article on Thursday; the suggestion that I was an old-timer was some way off the mark. But, they can call me whatever they want as long as we manage to pull off a result at the Nationals in two week’s time. In their defence, I like to go into races without shaving for a few weeks, so I did look about ten years older and uglier.
I’ll give you a brief rundown of the race, but it’s a pretty dull affair all being told. Lucian got us off to a strong start with a 6th place finish on leg one, which enabled me the chance to hunt down a few other teams. I was able to do just that, running into the lead at about the kilometre mark, and despite the fast start just about held things together. Shane ran a storming leg three, despite an attack from Carl Hardman of Salford, and handed over to James with an extended lead. James ran sensibly and did everything required of him to pass the baton to his elder brother with a now comfortable margin ahead of Salford. Tom looked resplendent on the first lap of his leg and pushed on in the latter stages to match Shane’s time and handover to Joe with an unassailable lead. Joe then took the glory leg and much like Shane showed a fine return to form in extending the victorious margin to over two minutes.
This was a big achievement for LWAC, especially considering it’s our first senior medal at one of the big relay events.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank members of the other teams at the Northern’s on Saturday and other people from the wider running community for their support and congratulatory messages. It was nice to see and hear the lads of Salford, Leeds and Liverpool, to name a few, all cheering on various members of our team and being genuinely happy for our success. At the end of the day, we all do this running thing for the same reason, because we enjoy it. So to see rival teams spurring each other on shows the spirit of grassroots running in this country and I’m sure races like this will provide a springboard for a few of us to go onto even bigger things.
